The Heart Behind The Letter Between & Why It Took Me Until My 40s to Start Writing It

Emily, Canadian mom and travel blogger, on her first day in Europe at 41.

Chasing Travel Dreams as a Working Mom in My 40s

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to travel. Not just go on vacation, but really travel — experience the world, walk unfamiliar cobblestone streets, eat pastries I can’t pronounce, get lost and love it.

“Travel to Europe” lived on my bucket list for decades. But like a lot of dreams, it kept getting reshuffled behind what felt more urgent: finishing school, building a career, getting married, having a baby, buying a house, doing the next “right” thing.

I always told myself there would be time for travel later. That one day, when life finally slowed down, I’d go. Except life never really slows down — it stacks up.

I didn’t set foot in Europe until my 40s. And the moment we arrived — jet lagged, overpacked, starry‑eyed — I knew we’d be back. That first trip as a mom in her 40s changed something in me. It reminded me that dreams don’t expire just because life gets full.

That moment sparked the beginning of The Letter Between, a Canadian family travel blog focused on real‑life, budget‑friendly adventures for everyday families.

Why We Prioritize Family Travel on a Budget

It’s not like I’d never traveled. I got married in Jamaica. I’ve visited several Caribbean islands. But somewhere between diapers, mortgages, and morning routines, travel kept getting bumped lower on the list.

Until I realized I didn’t want it to be.

Now, as a working mom traveling in her 40s with an incredible daughter, I want travel to fit into our lives — not exist outside of them. I want her to have roots and wings: a consistent home base with lifelong friendships, and the confidence to explore new corners of the world.

We’re not luxury jet‑setters. A splurge for us is a mid‑range hotel with breakfast included. But travel doesn’t have to be glamorous to be transformative.

The Letter Between was born from that clarity — the realization that travel isn’t just possible for everyday families… it’s powerful.

What You’ll Find in The Letter Between

This blog isn’t about quitting your job and becoming a digital nomad (though I’ve daydreamed about it). It’s about creating travel rhythms in real life: even when that life includes soccer practice, work emails, and reheated coffee.

Here, you’ll find:

  • Resources to help you plan, reflect, and create core memories on the road
  • Budget-friendly family travel ideas that don’t compromise the magic
  • Honest stories from a Canadian mom figuring it out one trip at a time

We travel with intention. We travel mid-range on a good day. We travel to remember who we are—together and individually.

If you’ve ever felt like you “missed the boat” or waited too long to chase the thing you love, let me tell you: you didn’t.

There’s no wrong time to start saying yes to your dreams. Even if it means booking your first dream trip decades after you first imagined it. Even if you’re packing snacks, stuffies, and one too many travel adapters. Even if you’re 41 and pinching yourself on a quiet street in Venice.

You can choose to say yes to this life, this world, right now. I did. That’s why I started this blog.

Welcome to The Letter Between. I’m so glad you’re here.
